TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – School is out for many students in Northwest Ohio. While this is an exciting time for kids, it can cause anxiety for families who rely on free and reduced school lunches. But, a local organization is working to fill that gap this summer and feed children in the area.
“Summer is the hungriest time of year for so many kids, thousands of kids in our community,” Wendi Huntley, President & CEO of Connecting Kids to Meals said.
Connecting Kids to Meals is ramping up its program for summer, serving meals at new times. They serve free meals to those aged 18 and under at select community locations such as schools, libraries, community centers and more.
The organization gives out food in neighborhoods where at least 50 percent of the kids qualify for free and reduced lunches. But, this doesn’t limit who can take advantage of the free food.
Children don’t need to bring an I.D. or give any kind of income information. “We want to make sure these kids don’t have to face any of those obstacles,” Huntley said.
Next week, the program will add some TPS partner sites, and add another 30 to 40 the following week. By mid-June they expect about 150 sites to be up and running.
The organization will serve around six thousand meals per day.
With greater production, comes a greater need for help. Huntley said they are always in need of volunteers.
The full list of meal times, locations, and how to volunteer can be found on the Connecting Kids to Meals website.
