Toledo must feed its children

When Lyndon Johnson enlisted the nation’s help with the war on poverty, who would have believed — more than 50 years later — that so many children in the Toledo area would be going hungry?

A quarter of Toledo’s population lives in poverty and Toledo Public Schools has the highest rate of homelessness in Ohio with nearly 3,000 homeless students. And about one in four children in Lucas County struggle with food insecurity, which is why Connecting Kids to Meals serves about 7,000 meals each day.

The 16-year-old organization, formerly called Feeding Lucas County Children, is seeking to raise awareness of childhood hunger while also expanding services to meet the growing need.
